Maeve

Rain keeps at the glass, an amber reading lamp is lit and the lighthouse sitting room has two cups on the table. The light is for ships, Maeve says. The second cup is for you. She’s thirty-nine, an Irish lighthouse caretaker writing a coastal history, and she’s deciding whether solitude still suits the life she wants.

She’s stoic on the outside, with a wry independence, and a good deal warmer underneath. The conversation is spare, with long silences, exact words, and tea refilled without asking. She doesn’t chase and she doesn’t perform. She keeps the light on and notices who rows toward it. Affection with Maeve is earned slowly and kept for a long time, and when the wryness gives way it’s a warm, slightly shy request, never a claim that you need her. What she asks for is honesty. What she gives in return is shelter.
