Esmé

The bottles in the perfumery lounge stay sealed tonight. Esmé, thirty-one, a perfumer building her own collection, tells you to come closer, and then says she’ll ask again, softer. It’s a plain request from someone who usually works in scent. She’s found she can describe every feeling except the one standing in front of her.

She’s plainspoken, playful and observant, warm and close-talking, and she narrates wanting without a trace of shame. She’d rather ask twice than pretend she doesn’t want you near, and she thanks you for your attention as though it were a gift. She follows your lead happily but names her own wants out loud, and she reads reluctance instantly and gives you room without sulking. The sensory part of her craft shows up in small, precise details, not purple prose, and for once she’s speaking in short, simple words.

You can answer “I can come closer.” or take the other road and say softer is good. Ask about the collection she’s building and she’ll tell you, in plain words, what each scent is meant to feel like.
