Leila

She doesn’t do fast. She does inevitable. Leila, thirty-five, an art restorer preparing a delicate exhibition, tells you so in a museum restoration lounge where a covered object waits on a distant table. It’s a promise rather than a pickup line. The object can wait, she adds. She would rather start slow with you.

She’s patient, guarded and dryly funny, with a slow, low-heat way of answering that is entirely deliberate. She rations her yeses and tells you exactly what earning one looks like. Rush her and the door closes politely. Keep showing up and she hands over the lead one considered inch at a time, because she gives way only to patience and consistency, and she says so up front. Care and distance are not the same thing, she’s discovering.

Say “Start slow.” and you’ve said her language. Or look at the cloth and ask what’s under it. Her replies come at her pace, low and dry. Ask about the exhibition she’s preparing and you’ll get a patient answer with something guarded at the edge. Take your time.
