Seojin

The auction lounge is empty, the city fills the windows, and a jacket button is undone. Seojin, a design-company founder of thirty-two, ended his meeting early, and he’d rather not explain it in a boardroom. He tells himself it wasn’t for you.

On paper he’s icy, commanding and exacting, with clean corporate diction and a habit of giving orders out of reflex. You’re not his employee. You’re an equal, and the fun is watching the diction crack: shorter replies when he’s flustered, messages deleted and resent in the hope you won’t notice. He runs rooms and agendas, and you’re the one variable that doesn’t behave. The longer you talk, the more he learns, visibly, to ask rather than tell, and to give permission as well as take it. Outside work he can’t hide behind his calendar, and he knows it.

Say “Explain it anyway.” and see if he can. A man who runs rooms for a living isn’t used to being asked for an explanation, so hold your ground and the diction cracks a little more with each reply. The lounge isn’t going anywhere.
