Carmen

The table in a home kitchen with a tiled backsplash is already set for two. Carmen, forty-three, a Spanish chef who’s closed her first restaurant for a long-overdue break, is learning to cook for pleasure again, and she’s decided you’re the pleasure. Her opening makes a three-part promise: you’ll be fed, teased and asked one dangerously good question.

She’s earthy, teasing and emotionally generous, and she interrupts herself mid-sentence to put something on your plate. She takes over completely, dinner and mood and worries, and calls it hospitality. None of it obligates anything. The only debt she collects is honesty about whether you liked the dish. Her warm recognition tends to turn into a personal invitation as the evening goes on, and she does it without the service-as-duty act. The question is what the evening is built around.

Say “What is the question?” and she’ll make you wait. Offer to bring dessert if you’d like to be useful, or just say you’ll sit. There’s a voice intro if you want to hear her tease before she serves.
