Why you got locked out
If you opened Character AI and found you could read your chats but not send anything, an age check is the reason. As of October 2026, Character.AI requires age and identity verification from existing accounts, and it started enforcing that on older accounts in April 2026 — often with no warning. One day the input works, the next it is greyed out and there is a prompt asking you to confirm your age.
You did not do anything wrong, and in most cases you are not actually suspected of being a minor. An automatic age-assurance system scores every account from signals like how you signed up and how you use the app. Accounts it reads as possibly under 18 get pushed into a verification flow, and until you finish it your chats stay locked. The system errs on the side of locking people out, so a lot of adults get swept up by it.
The trigger for the lockout wave is a policy, not an outage. Back on 29 October 2025, Character.AI announced it would remove open-ended chat for under-18 users entirely. Age assurance is how it enforces that, and the enforcement has been widening across the user base through 2026.
What view-only mode actually does
View-only — some people call it read-only — means your account still exists and your chats are still there, but frozen. You can scroll what is already on screen, but you cannot send a new message, continue a conversation, or reliably reach your full history. The character will not reply because you cannot talk to it.
Nothing is deleted at this stage. The lock is a gate in front of the chat input, not a wipe. That matters for one practical reason: while you still have read access, you can copy out anything you want to keep before the verification prompt gets more insistent. If a particular conversation matters to you, select the text and save it somewhere now rather than counting on getting back in.
How the age check works — and why it misfires
The verification runs in two stages. First, an in-app facial scan through the third-party provider Persona: you point your camera at your face and the system estimates your age from your appearance. If it is confident you are an adult, that can be the end of it. If it reads your face as possibly under 18, it escalates to full document verification and asks you to upload a government-issued ID.
The weak point is the first stage. Face-based age estimation cannot reliably tell a 17-year-old from a 19-year-old, so younger-looking adults get bounced to the ID step or kept in view-only even when they are clearly over 18. "Stuck in view-only after the selfie" is one of the most common complaints on r/CharacterAI right now, and it is a limitation of the estimate, not something you did.
So the honest picture: there is no secret toggle, no prompt, and no setting that removes the lock. The only route Character.AI offers is to pass its check. If you are willing to do that, the steps below get you through it with the least friction.
How to get back in
If you want to stay on Character AI, work through the verification deliberately rather than retrying blindly:
Do the facial scan in good, even light with nothing covering your face. The estimate is more likely to clear an adult when the image is clean, so a well-lit scan can get you through without ever touching the ID step.
If the scan keeps failing and you are comfortable with it, the ID upload is the fallback. It is more invasive, but it resolves the flag when the face estimate will not.
Copy out any chats you care about while you still have read access, in case you decide not to verify or the flow stalls.
What does not work: making a new account to dodge the check. New accounts are scored by the same system and tend to get flagged the same way, so you would land right back in view-only. There is no bypass prompt or jailbreak for age assurance, and anything claiming to be one is not reliable.
If you would rather not scan your face
Plenty of adults are fine proving their age but not comfortable handing a face scan or a government ID to a chat app. If that is you, the realistic choice is a platform that does not ask for it.
Onscene is one. It is 18+, and you confirm you are over 18 by self-attestation — there is no selfie, no ID upload, and no third-party age service like Persona or k-ID in the loop. Guests can start a conversation without even making an account, so you can see whether it works for you before signing up.
The honest differences worth knowing: Onscene has 74 characters (69 public), it runs in the browser as a web app or PWA with no download, and there is no image generation in chat. Characters text you first, so you land on a message already waiting instead of a blank screen, and memory is kept as a document you can open and edit rather than something that quietly drifts. It will not import your Character.AI chats — nothing does that from the outside — but it is a working place to keep talking if you are done fighting a face scanner.
