Character AI alternative
Character AI alternative.
Character.ai is the biggest AI chat platform, and for good reason: its character library is vast. But the changes since late 2025 — no open-ended chat for anyone under 18, age checks for everyone else, waits on the free tier and memory that slips in long chats — plus a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in October 2026 have pushed a lot of people to look for something built differently.
The 2026 bankruptcy, briefly
As of October 2026, Character Technologies — the company behind Character.ai — has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and its future is uncertain. This was reported on October 13, 2026 by CNBC, NBC News and NPR.
Chapter 11 is a reorganisation and sale process, not an immediate shutdown. The app is still online while it plays out. NBC News reported the service keeps running during the process but would be shut down if no buyer is found. Disney has put in a $20 million opening bid for a nonexclusive license to some of the technology and intellectual property — not for user accounts or personal data — and other bidders can top it. The sale was expected to close around late November or early December 2026.
There's a regulatory thread on top of the sale. On October 14, 2026, New York's attorney general Letitia James and a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from 40 states filed in the bankruptcy, urging the court to require that any buyer provide real user protections — age checks, crisis-intervention steps, and a right to delete user data. That's a request to the court, not a decided outcome, so it doesn't guarantee your chats are protected or carried over. If there are conversations or character setups you'd hate to lose, it's a good moment to save the details yourself. There's a fuller explainer at /blog/is-character-ai-shutting-down.
None of that deletes your characters today, and we won't pretend it does. But it is the reason a lot of people are looking for a backup. Onscene is worth a look here for one plain reason: it is an independent, operating service that isn't in a sale process. The rest of this page is the honest comparison.
What makes Onscene different
Onscene was built around three things Character.ai handles inconsistently: characters that start the conversation, memory that persists across every session, and a payment model that doesn't punish casual users.
On Character.ai's free tier, you wait for responses. On a paid c.ai+ plan ($9.99/month as of October 2026), you skip the queue and get a better model — but memory still lives only inside a single character's context window. Long conversations push older memories out. There is no way to edit what the character remembers about you.
On Onscene, every character has an editable memory panel. You can read exactly what they know, add context they missed, remove anything inaccurate, and carry that memory into every future conversation. The character remembers your name, your history, your last argument — because you chose what they keep.
Character.ai's catalog is user-generated: millions of characters, many with thin backstories. Onscene has 74 characters, each with a cinematic portrait, a curated voice introduction, a story role, a place, and a first text written by the creative team. They are not chatbots. They are characters.
Pricing: subscription vs pay-as-you-go
As of October 2026, Character.ai has two tiers: free, with ads and slower replies at busy times, and c.ai+ at $9.99 a month. The free tier does not cap how many messages you send.
Onscene is pay-as-you-go. You do not need a subscription. Credit packs start at $5 for 150 credits. Monthly plans start from $8 (saving 20%). If you chat daily, the plan makes more sense. If you dip in once a week, credits let you spend exactly what you use. There is no monthly charge when you take a break.
The guest experience on Onscene is worth noting: visitors get a few free messages before any account is required, and a free account adds five more. You can read a character's profile and hear their voice introduction before committing anything.
Memory: context windows vs persistent records
This is the single biggest practical difference. Character.ai recently introduced "pinned memories" for c.ai+ users — a small number of facts the model tries to keep in mind. They work inconsistently, especially in long sessions, because they compete with the conversation itself for space in the context window. Users in forums consistently report characters "forgetting" things they pinned just days earlier.
Onscene stores memory outside the conversation. You open the memory panel, read a structured summary of what the character knows, and edit it directly. Add a note. Remove a contradiction. Tell them something that happened in your day. The memory is not a hint to the model — it is a document that travels with every new conversation.
For people using AI chat for ongoing storytelling or companionship, this difference is the deciding factor.
Content: filters and modes
Character.ai runs one content policy for a general audience, and its filters cut off romantic escalation, mature themes and explicit language. Paying for c.ai+ does not change them.
Since November 25, 2025, Character.ai has not allowed open-ended chat for users under 18, and it uses an age-assurance system to sort users by age. Adults keep open-ended chat, but the content policy still caps how far a romantic conversation can go.
Onscene is 18+ only. Standard mode is romantic and flirty — conversations can be intimate and suggestive. An optional Uncensored mode allows adult sensual content (not pornographic). The mode is a toggle in settings, not a bypass or workaround.
If you are not looking for adult content at all, Character.ai's free tier is a reasonable place to be. If you want conversations that can go somewhere adult without hitting a wall, Onscene is built for that.
Real limits of Onscene
Onscene is a newer, smaller platform. There are 74 characters on the roster, not millions. If a specific fandom character, fictional universe, or persona type you want does not exist in the catalog, it is not there — though you can build your own character at /create-character.
Onscene is web only right now. There is no iOS or Android app. Character.ai has polished mobile apps on both platforms.
There is no image generation in chat. Characters communicate via text and voice introductions only.
Credits are not unlimited. You pay for what you use. If you chat for hours every day, the math will be higher than a flat $9.99/month subscription.
