Is it down, or is it just you?
When a chat won't load or a response never arrives, the first question is whether the problem is on Character AI's side or yours. The quick test: open the site in a private or incognito window, or on your phone's mobile data instead of wi-fi. If it works there, the outage isn't global — it's your browser, cache, network, or account session.
If it fails everywhere you try, it's more likely a server-side issue. Character.ai runs on heavy infrastructure and sees traffic spikes in the evening and on weekends, so slowdowns and timeouts cluster around peak hours.
As of October 2026, Character.ai does not publish an official, real-time status page. That's unusual for a service its size, and it means you have to rely on third-party monitors and community reports to confirm an outage rather than an official dashboard.
Where to actually check
These are the places that tell you whether other people are seeing the same thing, roughly in order of usefulness:
Downdetector (downdetector.com/status/character-ai) and IsDown (isdown.app/status/character-ai) aggregate user outage reports. A sudden spike in reports is the clearest signal of a real, widespread outage. No spike usually means the problem is local to you.
The official X/Twitter account, @character_ai, is where Character.ai posts about major incidents and maintenance when they acknowledge them. It's not a status feed, so don't expect a note for every blip, but big outages sometimes get a reply or post.
The subreddit r/CharacterAI is often the fastest human signal. During an outage, the front page fills with "is it down for anyone else" threads within minutes. If the top posts are all about the same error, it's not just you.
The official Discord (discord.com/invite/characterai) and the in-app community are secondary places where other users and occasionally staff confirm issues.
As of October 2026, those are the honest options. There's no single button that says "operational" or "outage" from Character.ai itself.
Common errors and what they mean
A few messages come up again and again. What they usually mean:
"Internal server error" or a blank error screen — almost always server-side. Something failed on Character.ai's end. There's nothing to fix locally; wait and retry.
"Failed to generate a response" or a reply that never finishes — the model request timed out or was dropped. Common during peak load. Resending the message often works; if it keeps failing across many tries, it's likely load-related.
The page won't load at all, or spins forever — could be server-side, but is just as often a stale cache, an extension, or a network issue on your side. Run the quick fixes below first.
You're logged out or stuck on a loading screen after signing in — usually an expired session or a cookie problem. Signing out and back in, or clearing cookies for the site, tends to clear it.
Chats load but the character ignores context or repeats itself — that's not an outage. That's the model's context window filling up, which is a separate, structural issue. We cover why that happens in our guide on why Character AI forgets.
Quick fixes to try in two minutes
If the monitors don't show a global outage, the problem is probably local. Work through these in order:
Hard refresh the page (Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac) to pull a fresh copy instead of a cached one.
Try a private/incognito window. This disables extensions and ignores your cache, which isolates whether one of those is the cause.
Switch network — wi-fi to mobile data, or the reverse. This rules out a DNS or ISP hiccup.
Clear the site's cookies and cache, then sign in again. This fixes most logged-out and stuck-session problems.
Disable browser extensions, especially ad blockers and privacy tools, which sometimes break chat requests.
If none of that helps and the monitors do show a spike, there's nothing to fix on your end. It's a server-side outage and the only move is to wait and check back.
An outage is not the same as the bankruptcy news
Since mid-October 2026 a lot of the "is Character AI down" searches are really asking a different question, so it is worth separating the two.
A temporary outage is what the rest of this page covers: a slow load, a failed response, a stuck screen. It clears on its own or with a quick fix, and it has nothing to do with the company's future.
The bankruptcy is separate. As of October 2026, Character.ai's parent, Character Technologies, filed for Chapter 11 on 2026-10-13 and agreed to sell some of its assets to Disney for $20 million, with Disney set as the stalking-horse (lead) bidder in a court-supervised auction. That is a financial and ownership process, not an outage.
What it means for you day to day: the company has said it intends to keep the Character.ai platform running with minimal disruption during the sale, which it expects to conclude around late November or early December 2026. The platform would be wound down only if no buyer willing to keep it operating emerges. So right now the app is live, not deleted — if it will not load, it is almost certainly an ordinary outage, and the fixes above apply. If you want the fuller picture of the Chapter 11 process and what could change, we cover it in our guide on whether Character AI is shutting down.
While you wait
An outage is a bad time to be mid-conversation and locked out of it. If you just want to keep chatting with a character while Character.ai comes back, Onscene runs in the browser with no download.
The honest differences worth knowing: Onscene has 74 characters (69 public), it's web and PWA only, and it's 18+. Characters text you first, so you open a chat to a message already waiting rather than a blank screen — which is the opposite of starting cold. Memory is stored as an editable document you can read and change, so it doesn't quietly fall out of the conversation the way context-window memory does. Guests can start chatting without an account; a free account adds 5 free replies, and credit packs start at $5 for 150 credits.
It won't restore your Character.ai chats or characters — nothing does that from the outside. But it's a working place to land while you wait for the other service to recover.
