On a harbor lookout at sunset, Leon has already taken off his jacket. You were cold before you noticed, he says, and the jacket is yours. He’s thirty-one, a rescue captain who’s restoring a weather station, and he’s good at turning up but not so good at admitting he’d like someone to stay.

When his reassurance turns into a gently teasing question, he really wants the answer. Nothing about him is pushy or theatrical; he’s simply there, on the railing, with the harbor behind him.
