Character.AI memory problems: why characters forget — and fixes

Why AI characters forget your story, what lorebooks and pins actually do, and how to keep continuity on Character.AI and Onscene.

Guides hub

Characters do not “have amnesia.” The model has a context window, a summary, and whatever you pinned. When those disagree — or when the card is a novel — the room evaporates. That is the Character.AI memory complaint in one sentence, and it is not unique to Character.AI.

Fixes are boring and they work. This page is the boring version, then a soft CTA to Onscene if you want pins and story turns in one product.

Why they forget

  1. The window filled up. Old turns drop or get summarized into mush.
  2. The card is too long. Biography crowds out the last thing you said.
  3. The setting was never written down. Models invent a mall.
  4. You corrected in chat but not in memory. The next regeneration never saw the correction.
  5. Filter / safety rewrites can also snap a scene and reset tone, which feels like forgetting.

Character.AI has shipped lorebooks and story-memory features to fight this. Use them. They still will not save a 4,000-token definition with no room.

Fixes that do not require a new app

  • One-sentence who they are; three sample lines; a named room.
  • Pin the facts that must survive (names, the red hook, the brother’s city).
  • Correct early. One clear rewrite beats a paragraph of nagging.
  • Start a new thread when the summary is already wrong. Nostalgia is not continuity.

The same hygiene is in how to stay in-character.

What Onscene does differently

Onscene keeps recent conversation, selected memories, and the character card in the loop. Story worlds add turn structure so “what happened” is a move, not a vibe. It is not a perfect ledger — no hosted model is — but you are not pretending a wiki will remember the coffee.

If Character.AI’s filter is the other half of the pain, read Onscene vs Character.AI.

FAQ

Does Character.AI have a lorebook?

Yes, as a product feature that has evolved. Treat it as a notes file the model may see, not as magic. Write the room and the promises there.

Will a bigger model remember more?

Sometimes. Overflowed cards still lose. Pins still win.

How do I move a character without losing memory?

You cannot export the hidden summary. You can export the card you wrote and the facts you pinned. Recreate those on Onscene’s maker.
